Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who has become a lighting rod in the debate over same-sex marriage, will deliver a speech in Simi Valley in August, according to a political group sponsoring her appearance.
Prejean, 22, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the convention of the Young Republican Federation of California.
Prejean made headlines when, during the Miss USA competition, she answered gossip blogger Perez Hilton’s question about gay marriage by saying wedding vows should be reserved for men and women. Prejean finished as first runner-up in the contest, but later lost her Miss California title.
“She’s a new face in the conservative movement,” said Danielle White, 24, a member of Ventura County Young Republicans, who are hosting the convention this year. “We think she’ll get everyone energized. She’s relatable. She’s one of us.”
