The Ventura County chapter of the statewide Young Republican Federation of California raked in awards and picked up several board seats at the annual YRFC Convention in Simi Valley this weekend. The Ventura County group, almost defunct only two years ago, is experiencing a resurgence under the leadership of Matt Hewitt , who was elected vice chair of the state organization on Saturday.

The YRFC recognized Hewitt’s achievements by presenting him with two awards, one for his personal achievement and one to the Ventura County chapter itself, which hosted the convention.

Assemblywoman Audra Strickland, who spoke at the convention along with her husband State Senator Tony Strickland, was awarded with the YRFC’s Legislator of the Year Award by outgoing Chairman Ben Lopez, whose term expired on Saturday.

Carrie Prejean doesn’t have ‘any regrets’ of controversy

From The Ventura County Star

Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean said Saturday in Simi Valley that she wouldn’t have changed a thing about her controversial response to a question about gay marriage during the Miss USA pageant in April.

“I don’t have any regrets. It’s actually been a blessing in disguise,” said the 22-year-old San Diego native before her appearance as keynote speaker at a convention of the Young Republican Federation of California.

The weekend convention features workshops, meetings and speakers hosted by the Ventura County Young Republicans.

Prejean gained national attention during the Miss USA competition for her answer to a question posed by gossip blogger Perez Hilton about same-sex marriage. Prejean responded by saying she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Ventura County Young Republicans Oppose Special Election Ballot Initiatives

April 26th, 2009

Young Republicans

THOUSAND OAKS — The Ventura County Young Republicans, the local chapter of the Young Republicans Federated of California, voted Thursday night at their membership meeting to oppose Propositions 1A thru 1F that are on the May 19, 2009 Special Election ballot.

Ventura County Young Republicans Chairman Matt Hewitt had the following remarks:

“I am glad to see that the general membership of our organization agrees with the sentiment of most Republican organizations in California that the backroom deal negotiated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is not the best plan for California’s economy.

As the leader of an organization of young professionals, many of whom are trying to start and to develop lasting careers in Ventura County, I am concerned that the passage of the excessive tax increases in Proposition 1A would make it more difficult for the young people of Ventura County to find jobs.”

The Ventura County Young Republicans is the volunteer organization that represents Republicans aged 18 to 40 in Ventura County.
